WHN members Christine and Craig headed out with Health Development Society Nepal on this two-day multifaceted project to Garambesi in the Lamjung District. HDSN director Dr. Kiran Awasthi organized a partnership with Acupuncturist Without Borders, Quake Volunteers and the local organization SAHODAR Nepal. After a 6-hour bus ride, the last hour down a bumpy dirt road, the team of 24 volunteers arrived at noon and immediately got to work.
WHAT WAS ACCOMPLISHED:
Dentistry: The team of dentist treated 205 patients (134 extractions, 45 fillings & 10 fluoride treatments.
Acupuncture: 97 patients were treated with Christine helping the doctor by removing the needles.
Shelter: Two of Kiran’s award winning shelters was assembled which were funded by the local hospital and will be used as inpatient ward with three beds each. WHN also donated a 10x20 tent that was used for the acupuncture camp and will remain with the community.
First Aid Training: Dr. Bijay Tamang conducted a first aid training and distributed first aid kits to 23 teachers from 18 schools.
Psychotherapy Camp: A qualified therapist worked with children who accompanied their parents to the medical camp enjoyed drawing, dancing and face painting.
At a total cost for the camp of only $600 US you cannot get more bang for your buck. WHN was a partial funder of this camp. Moving forward we will we financing additional dental camps, training camps and medical outposts.
Relief aid, while well intentioned, often ends up in the pockets of corrupt local bureaucrats and/or multinational contracts, with very little reaching the people that actually need it. Ensure that your contributions reach those in need.
