Filling the gaps, delivering aid

Just over a week from the catastrophic floods in Nepal, our organizers on the ground continue to work closely with the community and local authorities as we help Nepal.

Reaching the places relief isn't reaching. Aid is now reaching affected communities. Kishor Lohani's team has gotten truck deliveries through with aid directly to families who need it — shelter tents, food, clothes, and cooking supplies like pots and pans, so people have both something to eat and the means to cook it. You can watch a video of one of his trips here.

Supporting Baireni Hospital. The hospital in Baireni, Dhading District, was buried under mud, with its ground floor and equipment lost. Over the past few days, cleanup crews — Nepal Police, Army personnel, youth volunteers, and local community members, roughly 300 people on the first day and 150 the next — have been clearing the building. Bikash Sapkota's team dropped off essential medicine and provided snacks for the 250 volunteers who came to help clean. A team of 5 doctors has now returned to the site to run a free health camp, and efforts are also underway to get the local school cleaned and reopened.

The hospital urgently needs a portable ultrasound machine (~$5,000, color, with convex and linear probes) and a 12-lead ECG machine (~$1,000). We're working to support this request through Support in Nepal, a registered Kathmandu NGO that partnered with #WeHelpNepal during the 2015 earthquake response.

This is mutual aid. We're not a large relief agency — we're a network of people with 30 years of ties to Nepal, moving resources straight to the communities and local organizers who know what their neighbors need. Your contribution goes to transport, food, shelter, medicine, and survival supplies.

Nepal needs us now. Please join us in providing immediate relief — make a donation here.

Relief aid, while well intentioned, often ends up as part of a large bureaucracy, with very little reaching the people that actually need it. Other times, local governments are simply overwhelmed and in a state of triage. We find ways to fill in the gaps. Ensure that your contributions reach those in need.
