As the monsoon season has arrived, the main need in Nepal is shelter. To address this, We Help Nepal supported a team of volunteers from the Cultural Youth Society of Nepal bringing temporary housing to Sindhupalchowk district, Mulkharka, Thale V.D.C. Here is an update from the volunteers:
“We stayed for 5 days helping the villagers to build temporary houses. We brought corrugated tin and other building supplies and were able to help set up 20 temporary houses. We brought first aid materials and provided villagers with basic medical assistance for minor problems.
In addition to setting up shelters we distributed 20 sacks of rice and 90 kgs of lentils to villagers. It was a great experience and all the villagers were very happy to get some relief materials, as they hadn't received much from either the government or the NGOs.
We were treated very well by all the villagers as they were very happy to see us helping them build at least temporary houses as monsoon is nearby.”
You can support temporary shelter by donating to We Help Nepal’s reconstruction fund.
Relief aid, while well intentioned, often ends up in the pockets of corrupt local bureaucrats and/or multinational contracts, with very little reaching the people that actually need it. Ensure that your contributions reach those in need.
